Review on πŸš— NEXPEAK NX501: Advanced OBD2 Scanner and Car Diagnostic Scan Tool for All OBDII Vehicles After 1996 by David Schweigert

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Looks similar to the Autel AL419 but uses a unique (and more advanced) firmware

At first glance it looks very similar to the Autel AL419 but it isn't. It's very similar in terms of feature set, but slightly better in two ways: 1) The firmware is better. I checked for an EVAP leak and the live data interface and refresh rate were excellent. The interface is colorful and easy to decipher at a glance. Updating the firmware was easy on a Windows PC. The updater is available on the manufacturer's website and will automatically download and flash the .bin firmware files. 2) The button layout is better. When I work on my machines I usually wear some kind of gloves. With the NEXPEAK NX501 I can wear thick winter gloves and still press the buttons clearly. Autel AL419 has thin membrane buttons that are close together and it's difficult to feel what you're pressing through gloves. The rest is very similar. Obviously they are related in some way (same suitcase, tote bag, etc.). Since they are both in the same price range, I would go with this NEXPEAK for the reasons above. If you are upgrading your Autel kit or adding an extra tool, be aware that OBDII cables look the same but the pinout is different. While this is good for the price and intended use case, it's not ideal. The English translation in the update app is a bit unclear. You need to hold down any key while connecting the USB cable to the PC for the device to boot into update mode. There is no macOS updater. The update program works automatically and depends entirely on the successful download of the firmware from their website. I'd rather be able to download a copy of the firmware directly in case the website goes down.

Pros
  • An absolute legend
Cons
  • No performance
