Problems in 2 months - read before you buy UPDATED

I bought the Stylo+ (2050-15) about two months ago. The thing worked for the first month and three weeks without any problems. It was exactly what I was looking for and the results were great. However, I've been having trouble with it for about a week. First I noticed that when carving/engraving wood, the drill started to vibrate a lot. It didn't seem to spin in balance. This is a problem when trying to create a detail or line. Then I noticed that the engine seemed to howl or wobble a little. Then I noticed that the speed wheel adjusts when the power is on (see video) even if the bit isn't touching any material. I set it to 5 but it will start going down to around 4. The only material I've ever used this device on is wood. It was not used for anything else. I have a video with both issues, but Revain only allows me to post one video per review. I contacted Dremel support after first noticing a vibration or imbalance issue. Their response was to send it in for diagnosis and they let me know if there would be any additional repair costs after they had a chance to look at it. There was no offer to provide a prepaid return label or initiate a device exchange. I've only had this item for two months and now I have to pay for the return postage and there may be additional repair costs? What is customer service? I don't know if this is a common defect but I am extremely disappointed in the quality of this unit and the customer service I have received so far. Send in this item for repair. I don't see that I have any other choice. However, I seriously doubt I will buy other Dremel products in the future if I can expect that from them. Promise, here is an update on my issue and experience with Dremel support. After reading my review of the product, a member of the Dremel support team contacted me and offered to fix the issue as the tool was only two months old. Yesterday I received a replacement tool and a prepaid return label for the defective tool. The time from first contact to receiving the instrument was 7 days. I'm certainly grateful that they replaced the faulty tool and I've updated my review accordingly, but I would like to offer the following customer service suggestions to the Dremel support team. First, your tech support needs to be a little more attractive. When I first contacted support, I stated that the tool was purchased in February, which means the tool was only used for two months. I was told to send it to a repair center for diagnosis (own expense) and then I would be advised of any repair costs. It wasn't until I posted my negative review that a support rep contacted me and offered a replacement tool and a prepaid shipping label. Had this been suggested when I first contacted customer service, I would have been happy and would not have posted a negative review. Second, when dealing with an angry customer, it's always good to do your best to fix the problem. This could be done by expedited shipping of a replacement tool (it was shipped via UPS) or by sending additional attachments/accessories to correct issues with a faulty product. Again, these are just suggestions. I did not consider either of these in my revised ranking list. I feel the company is showing its true colors in dealing with faulty products and dissatisfied customers. There are times when the product is defective. How the company handles these cases depends on whether I become a regular customer. This is just my opinion.

Pros
  • QUIET: Compact motor ideal for home use Feels better in hand when using tools
Cons
  • Small parts
