Review after 5 years: Reliable and economical. However, if you pay a few bucks more, buy the X-Acto 1800.

This X-Acto electric pencil sharpener was a good buy. Bought to replace another X-Acto (model 1800) pencil sharpener that lasted about three years. We use it in our house but it gets used quite a bit as we have three young children. After about six months this sharpener is holding up well. It sharpens well, doesn't make much noise, and has a fairly powerful motor. For the price it was a great buy and after a few glitches the X-Actos performed better than other electric pencil sharpeners we've tried in this price range. In our experience, the service life is about three years, with the engine running first. Some minor issues: the motor intermittently stops in the middle of a job when you're sharpening multiple pencils at once; probably to keep the engine from overheating or overloading (it starts again after a short break), but can be a bit annoying. Also, the plastic used in the construction of this device is thinner than the previous model we bought just a few years ago. Finally, and most annoyingly, emptying the chip bin is a bit messy due to the bin's vertical design. Overall, this device was a worthwhile purchase for us and a must have for anyone who needs help with light to moderate pencil sharpening tasks. Acto 1800 before, I would choose it if buying again as it feels and looks a little more substantial and cleans better. The 1800 costs a few dollars more, but the build quality and performance are worth it. Much luck. In any case, as the first day of school draws near, we shall test the power of the spirit of this wine press; Let's assume it continues to work great in the absence of updates. UPDATE 11/13/15: While the sharpener works very well and can take a lot of use, emptying is a royal pain that will no doubt require you to clean it after removing it. shaves. UPDATE 1/2020: This sharpener is still going strong. We've had it for over five years now, and that's longer than our previous model. Sure, my kids are a bit older and use it less often, but it still gets a lot of use. Yes, the tub's design could be better, but durability is a plus.
