I seem to have always used a plastic ruler. After a while they become hard to read (the markings fade), so this time I went with a metal ruler. To be honest I'll probably use the 6 inch ruler more than the larger one, but it's nice to have both. And laid out in one line, of course, I get 18 inches. The metal appears to be quite strong - doesn't look like it will bend/warp easily. The marking is easy to read. The rulers came in a plastic case (one for each ruler) which I think will help ensure the marks don't get erased. Suppose I remember to put the ruler back up my sleeve when I'm done, lol. I am happy with my purchase.
