I don't understand the problems that people who rate this item badly have. Would I rely on this tool when looking for wires and cables? no But it saved me time and MONEY. The landscaper chewed, trimmed, and trimmed my two hundred foot landscape lighting power cords. He left long before I discovered the lack of power in my lighting system. I was willing to pay someone up to $300 to go out and use one of the $1,000 wire detectors. I routed about 25 feet of new power wire, cut off one of the two wires, and then completely severed the other end. It took a maximum of 3.4 minutes to understand what sounds on this detector when the cable is completely broken, and again what it sounds like when just one wire is cut. I had to turn the volume up and down over time, but I found that the higher the volume, the higher the detection sensitivity. Then I started locating the buried power cable at the transformer. I was able to trace the cable about 30 feet UNDER my concrete patio until it came to my landscaping. The cable was covered with rocks, a weed barrier, old shredded bark, and loose soil. I found 2 full cuts and 2 single cuts on the wire and a tear in the insulation. All produce a clear return signal (sound). All this in less than 10 minutes. I would say this "budget" device saved me $100. And the time I decided to dig was to uncover the power cable and manually tug on the cable piece by piece to check for damage. Work smarter, not harder. LEARN how to use this device and be patient. It works.
