I have ordered one of these ESP8266 boards. He arrived early enough. I noticed that the developer provided many code samples for download. There is enough example code here to experiment and use to start my IoT project. The small screen is also useful for showing simple status messages. I am impressed. Update: I've been exploring the endless possibilities of this little IoT device. So far I've found that you don't need any LUA code at all. Instead, I used the Arduino IDE 1.8 with the HELTEC OLED libraries and the ESP-WIFI code libraries prebuilt by default. I wrote standard C code that works with any Arduino. I compile and upload the device like any other Arduino. OLED reserves some GPIO pins, so you can't use GPIO 4, 14 and 2. These IOT devices appear to be made by HELTEC, which helps generously. Unfortunately, most of these are in Chinese or very poor English. So far I've written applications for ESP that turn it into a web client that can GET to a server and a web server, or a combination of both. I used OLEDlibrary to display plain text on screen. There is no graphics library that I can see.
