Review on Microshift Advent Medium Cage 9-Speed Rear Derailleur - Black with Clutch by Samiran Pusarla

Really nice to have a 9 speed clutch shifter but you get what you pay for

This was the first derailleur and derailleur I installed myself. Installation went pretty smoothly, aside from the usual hassle of setting the switch (I need more practice). I had a hard time shifting it smoothly and feel like I have to constantly adjust it. Maybe I just need to improve the fine tuning. My biggest issue is that there is lateral play throughout the device. All the bolts are tight but the end of the cage moves back and forth a bit which I think could be the cause of the sloppy shifting. In comparison, my wife's GX shifter is very stiff. What bothers me the most is the weak grip. It's a little better than no clutch, but I can still hear the chain kicking back there on minimal bumps. I had to buy a chain guide as I dropped the chain multiple times on fairly easy trails. I assumed the ratchet and pawl design would be strong and stable, but it isn't. Overall I'm not overly happy, but hey, this is a cheap way to upgrade to a clutch derailleur without having to go to 11 or 12 speed. Transmission.

Pros
  • Derailleur
Cons
  • Ugly packaging
