I was given 1000/6000 as a starting stone when I first started learning to sharpen and so far I've been fine with it. One thing I learned is that you need the right grit for the right edge. In my case I understand that my 1000/6000 grit stone is a good medium stone but this 3000/8000 is much better for finishing and I prefer regular maintenance. Let me tell you that the 8000 grit gives my blade a nice mirror finish and I find it a little easier than the 6000 grit to cross that line between edge and razor blade. The included bamboo base is beautiful and durable, and the bottom should stick well to the work surface. I used the best leveling stone but it will definitely work if you don't already have one. And I didn't use the corner guide. In general very happy with everything.
