Review on Dorman 673 439 Integrated Catalytic Converter by Jack Robi

The best deal I could find, a little fog after installation is normal

Purchased March 3, delivered March 6, so shipped very quickly. I am installing it on a 1999 Honda Civic LX. It took my son (who is incompetent on mechanics) about three hours from start to finish to undress and dress the old cat. Essentially, it's a matter of removing the old one and attaching the new one. The hardest part for us was that after installation smoke came out of the cat so I figured there was a leak somewhere and kept tightening the bolts until they were too tight. Only to find out it's normal and it's a film of oil or whatever they put on new parts to keep them fresh. So I had to loosen all the screws and tighten them again to specification. REMEMBER there will be smoke for a few days/week after installation? As for the actual installation, there are nine nuts on top of the boiler, four bolts in the middle (holding the block together) and three bolts/nuts on the bottom that attach to the long section of exhaust pipe. There are no nuts for the cat's top, so you'll have to use your old ones or buy new ones. The four screws in the middle are pre-assembled, so all you have to do is connect and screw the top and bottom. The three bolts (not actually bolts but I don't know what they're really called, they're in the picture) that go from below came with three nuts that were too small so we couldn't even use them used the old ones. There is a fourth hole on the underside of the cat that leads to a Y-shaped fastener that screws into the face of the wall at the front of the engine. There are two spacers that go up and down and there are four smaller nuts that don't fit anywhere, so I don't even know why they were included. Maybe someone can tell me where I'm wrong here. The kit also includes a cover with two screws. Also, this cat was a little smaller than the one we replace in my Civic, but it's exactly the same. We just installed this today so I'll wait a week or two before taking it to get smog and then move on. I hope I pass. Wish me good luck. Brought in because of smog and passed with flying colors even though the inspector never looked at the real cat. And he gave me some shit knowing I'd already failed twice. But I passed without any problems, that's the main thing.

Pros
  • Lots of positive emotions
Cons
  • Vulgarity
