Review on πŸ”¬ DURAC B61800 6100 Triple Hydrometer: Shatterproof Upgrade for Enhanced Accuracy by Rusty Smith

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Won't break if dropped. Has a range of 1,000 to 1,150 for measuring the specific gravity of a liquid.

I've found others have had trouble with this hydrometer, but it has one major advantage over the more expensive (and more accurate) versions - it won't break if it rolls off the stand. This device is 8.5 inches from the base to the top of the pressure scale, so you will need a graduated cylinder of at least 9 inches. Distilled water gave the correct value of 1.00 when the device was used correctly: place the device in the liquid and lower it to the point where it appears to be floating, then lower it a little more , release and take the measurement. . There are several scales including the Brix scale as well as the volumetric alcohol scale but these are really just specific gravity conversions for which the available scale ranges from 1.000 to 1.150. Please note that due to scale and product limitations, this hydrometer is limited compared to laboratory equipment. For example, you can't check the specific gravity of your acetone stock because it's around 0.79, but you can use whole milk as a reference liquid (it should be around 1.04). I have washed the product several times with dish soap and a soft sponge and I have not noticed any deterioration in the print on the plastic. The device comes in a plastic storage box that slides open in the middle (unless you accidentally tear it apart when you first unpack the device). There is no doubt that this is not a laboratory device, but you can see the difference between the 1.010 and 1.015 readings if you use it consistently with liquids of the same temperature.

Pros
  • Fabric Analysis Instrument
Cons
  • Ugly Packaging
