Review on Maple Wood Edge Grain Reversible Cutting Board by John Boos Block - 24x18x2.25 Inches by Tara Perez

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Impressive and solid but with some issues

I took this Cherry board after sending the same board back to Maple. The original maple block was returned due to large cracks, despite following the lubrication and care instructions (see the large number of reviews from people who have experienced splits). This cherry version has not yet been split, either by serendipity or due to some inherent characteristics of the cherry. It's a beautiful finish and I love how tight the board feels. It's also softer, which I like better when cutting. The downside is that crop marks are pretty easy to see on the board. Some things to consider when handling these boos blocks. If you live in a very dry climate, you should oil the block weekly for the first few months, not just once a month as is recommended. I would also recommend box oil which additionally helps to seal the oil in the box and protect against excessive moisture ingress. This approach has served me well. Finally, I noticed a few minor quality issues, but they weren't enough to make me return the board. You may feel that the surface of the board is not entirely smooth when you run your hand over it. There is some very subtle texture variation and a slight indentation along one surface of the board. Also the boos stamp on the side of the board is a bit incomplete. The edges of the letters, especially in the lower left corner of the "B" in Boos, are not perfectly printed. These minor issues are a bit disappointing for the price of this board and I would even suggest that this board should be marketed as a "second". I could certainly return it to Revain and try another, but in the end I'm so happy with the board I didn't want to bother returning it. However, please note that if you buy them online, due to some Boos quality control discrepancies, you may receive them with minor issues and need to deal with the return.
