EnGenius EWS - my new review

So I've been using the EnGenius EWS5912FP switch and the EWS310AP access point for a while now. The set-up was incredibly easy. I initially used the console cable to change the IP address but later found that I could have used the default IP address of 192.168.0.239. Having the switch function and AP controller in one unit is very convenient. So far it works great and I have not had any problems connecting. Band steering to the 5GHz network works very well and has reduced our interference problems. We also have several IP VOIP phones. We added a second EWS310AP and enabled Fast Roaming. Our users in the main building were able to stay on call even when walking from one AP to the other. This was great and certainly the main reason for having a switch based AP controller! I'm very pleased with this function. One area of concern though. We have several EnGenius access points already in place including a couple of ENS500EXT and an EAP600. This setup will not find nor manage those access points, even when they are connected directly to this switch. Also noted that while the other access points can find each other using Device Discovery in their menus, this does not discover the EWS310AP either. While I'd certainly like to manage all of my AP's from a single point, this doesn't appear to be possible.Overall I'm very happy with it and I'd recommend it over the Ubiquiti system that we also tested.

Pros
  • Easy to install
Cons
  • The 130W power budget may be insufficient for businesses with high power demands, requiring the purchase of additional switches or power supplies
