Heavy Duty: Hole Saws

We have this for drilling sandwich beams. Each joist was about 2 inches thick and 4 of them were clamped together. In some cases it was blind drilling, so we ended up finding a bolt coming from behind, or nails, or whatever. Each time we did everything we could to remove the metal, including cutting with a saw or drilling around the studs and banging back. In total we drilled 10 holes, that's 40 individual holes in the beam. After 4 the tooth broke off but he continued drilling. After 6 one of the pins on the flange came loose but we were able to tighten it and keep going. After 9 the flange broke off so we had to replace it but we hadn't had one that severe and paid special attention to the last one. a series of bars. Looks like she's been to war, but she's withstood some pretty massive abuse. In comparison, a "heavy duty" hole saw that looks more traditional, like a band saw wrapped around it, went through 1 set of joists and barely. Hopefully I don't have to do another project like this anytime soon, but I would do it again. 1 star deducted because the flange is broken and I think it's because it's not tightened enough. You can rotate it as far as you can, but the stylus will end up about halfway out of alignment, so you'll have to move it back and then it will play a bit. I think that's what led to the breakage of the pin and total failure. Of course we pushed it to the limit, but a small fix would extend the lifespan even further.
