Awesome SPD Big Platform Pedal

I've been driving an SPD for decades. On a mountain bike, I like to set them tight enough that I can't jump out, and not tighter so I can get in and out without thinking. Because of this, the foot moves a lot when buckled up and I need to feel a solid platform to ride with confidence. If my foot gets in and out of the pedal frequently and may or may not click, it needs to be big enough for me to find it every time. After all, they have to be tough. I've only had the Ripper a few weeks but have ridden it over 100 miles mostly in the West Hills of Las Vegas. Very rocky terrain. It only took me a few blocks to get the tension adjusted to my satisfaction and I haven't thought about it since. The first day I thought my feet were too loose on the pedals for normal riding. I decided to only install two front cleats on each pedal face to match the shape of my shoes. By the second day, the pedals were gone from my mind. They are easy. This is exactly what I expect from a pedal. I've had platform pedals with and without rocker clips. I find that the angle of the rocker makes hitting the clamp more natural. I don't need to think about it. Rocker Ripper does what I expect. I pedal pretty hard. Sometimes I'm amazed at how hard I hit rocks. How didn't I see that? I hit them hard enough to lift the rear wheel off the ground. My bike and I weigh 260 pounds. The pedals show no tension. However, I'm not a big jumper. I do flat landing drops no higher than 2ft and have never been able to do big gaps. Most of my "jumps" fall squarely into the bunny-jumping-over-roots category. Unfortunately, I cannot say how strong the waves are from this point of view. Finally, I like the idea of recovery kits. I've been using the latest pedal design for 25 or 30 years and I'm completely satisfied with it. But they don't make them anymore. I found a new set on eBay and realized I was unlucky if I broke them or got a bad bearing. I gave Funn Ripper a try and I'm glad I did. I wouldn't change anything.

Pros
  • Absolutely amazing!
Cons
  • Not bad, but...
