I travel a lot for business and usually take my 7.1 pound Dell laptop with me. In general, all I really need when I'm on the go is email access and a light word processor. When I recently upgraded from an old Palm III to a Compaq iPAQ handheld, I also bought a Pretec modem. It's tiny, so it easily fits in a small bag that also contains an AC adapter and a few other small items. But it works great. I've had no problems accessing my AOL email using the AOL Anywhere software. I had a little more trouble setting up the software to access my network, but it's working now. The instructions didn't really help. But the software is fairly intuitive, and any Windows 9x user who has set up dial-up networking on their PC will have no trouble setting up dial-up networking on their Pocket PC. Pretec is amazingly durable. I dropped it from 3 feet onto a wooden floor, banged it against a wall and generally abused it. No problem. Like the old advertisement for Time watches. The download speed is great. The only serious problem is that this is a really strong pig. Have the power adapter ready. highlighted.
