It turns out that there should be a considerable difference between "7x" and "8x". I have binoculars that are 8x magnification and with that number objects appear much closer when viewed. Objects appear *hardly* closer with this monocular. I constantly remove it from my eyes and double check because it's hard to understand how little the distance changes. However, I give this monocular credit for making subjects look MUCH HONEST. My eyesight needs some improvement - maybe I need new glasses - but still I've never had glasses that allow me to read things from 8 to 15 feet away the way I can when I'm looking through this thing. I mean you could. I haven't read the book, it's not magic, but if I look at the illegible cover of a DVD box that's across the room, for example, I can see the details and the read title. As said, it doesn't make the DVD case much closer, but it definitely makes the picture sharper. I'm not sure how often I'll use it as it doesn't quite do what I wanted it to (zoom in on objects). but I didn't think it was worth going back. I paid about $13 and it would have cost me a little over $8 to get the whole hustle and bustle back on track. Okay, I'll toss it in the glove box, and I'm sure there will be times when I'll be glad it's there. I'm giving it 4 stars although I "like" that it only costs 3 stars - that seems fair because I think it actually does what it's supposed to and it's me who got the limitations wrong.
