The clips work great and hold the edge of the tarp very well even in strong winds (I folded the edge of the tarp to make it thicker). If you use the clip on thin or softer fabric it may crush it as it is a very strong fastener. Clips were attached to protect it. (You could probably use any type of fabric, or fold it in half). As mentioned in other reviews, they are a bit difficult to undo. I've found that if you push the "top" half (the half that fits under the bar) up/forward (as if it's popping out from under the bar) AND out to the side to release it, it comes loose to release the lock.
