After weeks of searching for a simple and convenient way to turn the Raspberry Pi on and off from the TV and off, and not found a good solution, I found a simple, clean, inexpensive, unobtrusive way using an $8 relay switch. If you can do a simple wire splice and know very basic wiring, you can do it. Many TV/monitors have a USB port so this will work, and as long as the TV/monitor is off and the USB port interrupts the USB 5V power supply, this will work. I can confirm this works on the Hisense 65 inch 4K TV. If you turn off the TV after 10-15 minutes, the TV's USB port will also turn off. Other TVs/monitors may do this immediately or take longer. On some TVs you may need to go into the power settings or USB settings and set the port to disable when the TV is off. Prelude: All my movies are stored on a Western Digital 4TB portable hard drive connected to a Raspberry Pi 4B via USB 3.0. Any version of the Pi will work. The Pi's video output goes to the TV's HDMI input. I use LebreELEC and have only installed and downloaded Kodi. Turning off Kodi is easy with the Kodi OS, but the problem was that the Pi won't turn back on even though the power stays plugged in? It's useless to me as you can't turn it back on! The biggest problem is that you can't turn it back on even though it has power, so the power supply has no real purpose (other than the clock) other than wasting power, even when it's very low and people say that just leave them activated . I also prefer to have it completely off as I don't bother with the clock. A popular method that everyone seems to use is plugging/unplugging or attaching a switch to the USB power cable, which also wastes time, which is why many seem to accept this method. I've found many other ways to get the Pi to turn on and off; Manual power switch on the power supply, remote power switch on the wall socket, plug in/unplug the power supply (weakest), option boards, IR diodes, option boards that need to install software, or some GPO option boards that take up space in the Pi- Housing that is already very limited. I'd rather leave it all open and available for other things as there isn't much room inside the case. I didn't want any extra remote controls, no software work, no drilling into the case (I have a FLIRC case) for IR, nor any cables coming out of the case. This method also doesn't affect the board itself, gives the box a clan look, doesn't require additional power from the board or cause heat or amp loading issues, and is very easy to do. Turning off the power gave me the idea to use the TV's 5V USB port as the trigger/power supply. Someone may ask why the hard drive shouldn't go straight through the TV? I can, but the media center that the TV is built into is terrible, far from being able to control anything or being useful as a media center, no illustrations or movie information like Roku. I can power the Pi from the TV's USB port, but only by itself, since the TV's USB port doesn't have enough amps to run both devices at the same time, there just aren't enough amps. The solution was this relay switch: DZS Elec 5V-30V I Channel Wilde Voltage Adjustable Relay SwitchSetup:1. All that needs to be changed on the relay switch itself is removing/desoldering the snap switch actuator and soldering a wire to the switch to have a permanently closed contact on the switch. This keeps the relay switch on as long as power is present through the 5V input of the Micro USB 5V.2 input. Connect the USB cable from the micro USB 5V input of the switch to the USB port of the TV.3. The third part is to take the power wire that you use to power your Pi and touch or cut it to get to a line, either red or black. It's best to touch so you can leave all other wires intact as they won't be used. You only have to touch or cut/use ONE line, either red or black, not both! All other wires can be left alone or sealed with tape. Take ONE of the cut leads (like the red one) and connect one side of that cut lead to the COM (common COM) on the relay switch connector and the OTHER side of the cut red wire to NO (normally open NO). Terminal. When cutting the red wire, do not cut the black wire, leave the back wire and all other wires in the power wire as they will not be used. Looking at the diagram, just take both ends of the two ends of ONE cut cable (like the red one) and connect one side of the cut cable to a connector called Public COM and the other cut side of the cable to a regular connector. Open the NO connector. Note: You will NOT use a normally closed (NC) clamp. You don't need to worry about setting the time of relay 024 as it will be skipped since the trigger switch is closed. Also, you don't need to connect anything else to power the relay, such as: a (TRIG) low level trigger or connectors labeled Input + or Input - as these are not used when connecting the Micro SUB 5V input cable as they are just an alternative input feed. Operation/Use: Connect the power cable to the power supply and the Pi itself that powers the Pi (on both ends), and connect the 5V USB input power supply of the relay switch to the USB port of the TV. When you turn on the TV, the TV's USB port activates the relay switch and supplies 5V to the Pi through the micro USB input. The light on the relay comes on and stays on. It should boot or whatever operating system you use, LibreELEC/Kodi in my case. The TV will indicate that there is no signal on your input (whichever port you use as the input) and when you turn off the TV it will turn off the TV's USB port and cut power to the relay switch which is pivoting away from Pi. I hope this helps those looking for a simple, inexpensive, and reliable way to turn their Pi on and off. As I mentioned earlier, I can confirm this works on a Hisense 65 inch 4K TV. If you turn off the TV after 10-15 minutes, the TV's USB port will also turn off. Other TVs/monitors may do this immediately or take longer. On some TVs you may need to go into the power settings or USB settings and set the port to disable when the TV is off. Enjoy!
