Review on πŸ”Š Fantech 2SHE1221 Ceiling Mount Exhaust Fan by David Edwards

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Great fan, but many design flaws.

, so when I first got it I immediately noticed that the frame is larger than 12x12. So I just gave it up, it wasn't easy and that's good and bad. Good because it's a thick, hardened piece of metal, but bad because I had to cut it to fit. It didn't take much time to install, but here's a FAMOUS bug!. Very loud knocking/popping. At first I thought maybe something is loose. Nothing was dangling, but note one major design flaw. The fan drive shaft has a slight play. The shaft moves freely forwards and backwards. I've noticed that when the shaft is pushed down on the back of the fan (chassis) the noise stops, so I made an attachment with some zip ties to push on the back of the case to stop the noise . THEN. I wondered if he just needed lube. So I opened up the case, 4 clamps which are easy to remove with a flat head and found the shaft has grease all around but is completely removed from the shaft. BINGO! I lubricated the shaft with RoyalPurple Grease but any bearing grease will work, I personally prefer this grease. Now, a few days later, the noise is completely gone. I'm a carpenter so I had to eliminate the wood dust in the air. Then 2 more cons, the wings do not fully open and close when turned on, and this becomes an entrance for insects (even when fully closed, there are slots on the sides). To fix this I put car wheel balance weights on the flaps to give them more weight when they close. Now the problem with bugs (gaps on the sides when the wings are fully closed), between the fan propellers and the wing cover I put a window screen which I was afraid might hit the propeller but this didn't happen. Thus, all defects are eliminated. This is a very expensive fan and I didn't think I would have to modify it so much to make it work. But in the end it is very well built with quality materials. Hope this review helps, it's long but worth it if you run into these issues. I have attached photos of the shaft before and after lubrication. Update: A week later, the loud knocking returned. I did a lot of research and came to the conclusion that although the fan looks good from the outside. They design the actual engine very poorly. The rear end of the motor has a plain bearing. This means that the shaft runs on a bushing and not a ball bearing. Also significant wave travel is over 1/2 inch. Which I think is the main noise problem. I'll try calling Fantech and see if the screw is out of balance and causing vibration or something. But in this price range I didn't have to go through these steps.

Pros
  • Excellent overall performance
Cons
  • There are doubts
