I used to use a pair of large towels. I have no idea why I didn't get the mat sooner. This is a huge step up from my previous homemade DIY, both cosmetically and functionally. I don't know if this rug is better or worse than other rugs. However, the size is perfect for a balance bike. Maybe it could be a bit shorter and narrower (5 inches?), but the extra space allows you to stand next to the bike to get off/on and thus the bike spikes don't damage the ground. Here are a few things I noticed: *looks MUCH better than towels *doesn't roll or crawl when riding *no sweat absorption (puddles on it) *thick enough to protect hardwood from thorns *sturdy and thin enough to avoid rocks or feeling rocks jiggle *no audible difference in sound* room to climb up and down the sides btw although i didn't hear any difference in sound when riding it i hope this reduces transmission through the parquet floor to the neighbors.
