I got off antidepressants by taking 5-HTP and L-Tyrosine in a 1:10 ratio as recommended by my naturopath. It was really amazing because when I tried to lower my dose of antidepressants without supplements I went from feeling good to having one of the worst depressions I have ever experienced and I have battled depression for most of my life. After adding 5-HTP and tyrosine, I was able to lower my antidepressant dosage with minimal side effects. 5-HTP helps the body produce serotonin and L-Tyrosine helps the body produce dopamine, which somewhat balances this out. It's important to take them together because adding one in large amounts like I did without adding the other can create a chemical imbalance in your brain. 5-HTP itself has a mild sedating effect, so taking it at night is fine, but I take part of the dose with tyrosine in the morning and have no problems. Taking supplements in pill form has become increasingly expensive. (much more so than antidepressants), so I decided to try BulkSupplements, which are significantly cheaper than getting them in capsules. I'm not interested in making my own capsules, so I just mix the powders with water and sip it quickly while holding my breath. It works! Calculating the dosage was a bit tricky, but this is how I do it: In the morning (right after getting up) in the evening I mix 1/16 teaspoon (approx. 100 mg) 5-HTP + 1 teaspoon (approx. 2000 mg) tyrosine (before bedtime) I mix 1/8 teaspoon (about 200 mg) 5-HTP + 1/2 teaspoon (about 1000 mg) tyrosine. HTP is slightly sedative. I tried taking the full dose of tyrosine in the morning and the full dose of 5-HTP at night and felt very irritable during the day. When I reduced the dosage a bit, I noticed a difference in my mood, so I know it's having a significant effect. 5-HTP powder has a slightly sweet taste. It's not very pleasant, but I take it in such small amounts and so quickly that I don't mind too much. I take a relatively high dose because, as I said, I use it as a substitute for antidepressants. . I would recommend speaking to a naturopath about dosages and what might be right for you, and I would definitely recommend taking 5-HTP with a 1:10 tyrosine ratio. When I asked my GP about 5-HTP for depression, she had no idea what I was talking about and instead prescribed me antidepressants. She also recommended lowering the dose of antidepressants, which has been incredibly damaging to me, so be wary of GPs when it comes to things like this. GPs are well trained in many things, but supplements and diets are not usually one of them. ://www.amazon.com/Mood-Cure-4-Step-Program-Emotions--Today/dp/0142003646/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1400876462&sr=1-1&keywords=the+mood+cureIt details how to find out what supplements you need and how much. Overall, this is a quality and effective supplement.
