Good but not perfect

Let me first say that I am an advanced GPS user. I have an old Garmin C320 as well as a TomTom Navigator 6 on my pocket phone. I liked the c320 but thought it would be better to spend the money on a new model with better specs than on new cards for an old machine. I can't get new maps for TomTom Navigator 6, so that's not an option either. As a side note, I loved having real GPS software on the phone with voice navigation as it could navigate through contacts (well enough). It was easier for me to use the phone than to get the c320 and set it up. A small problem was that my phone required an external GPS receiver. The guys at the car wash stole the one I used and it worked great. The new one I got wasn't able to connect to my phone regularly. Must be a big effort. So I researched different models and then bought a Garmin Nuvi 1350t. I downloaded it using free downloadable points of interest I found via google but found I couldn't get it to play its own notification tones (mp3 format). A few weeks later I saw the Nuvi 755t for about $10 less and it plays MP3s! I was happy with the 1350t, but the 755t sold for less and had a few more features. Here is a detailed comparison of both devices with some pros and cons for each. Nuvi 1350t: Pros: - I like the style - It came right out of the box - I like the Garmin interface more than TomTom (more on that below) - Overall good navigation - Easy to select destinations - No need to know the city for locations in cities in cities like my area - Good security, with a pin lock that automatically unlocks when near "home" - Great volume for conversational navigation - Great pronunciation of street names - Great turn-by-turn notifications - Help in traffic in several lanes - a great feature! Cons: - Doesn't play MP3s - Documentation and what I needed to do, Quick Starto Ex didn't need. If you want to see the satellites screen, you must keep your finger on the connecting rods. Found by accident as there is no documentation. Routing isn't always something I could choose. Traffic is somewhat useless and difficult to use (I don't use it). compared to what is "normal" for that time of day on that road/highway. That is, with freeway traffic at 5:00 p.m., it stays green even if I stop and go to "park”. The dodge function seems to get me to freeway entrances like they're more expedient in a hurry. Hour! - On my 1350t there was a spot on the touchscreen that wasn't sensitive enough - ie. It was very difficult to press #1 on the PIN screen (top left corner) but seems to have improved over time. Nuvi 755t: Pros: - It was ready to go right out of the box - I like the Garmin interface more than TomTom (more on that below) - Overall good navigation - Easy to select destinations - No need to know the city to find places that there are in cities in within cities like my area - Excellent volume for voice navigation - Excellent pronunciation of street names - Excellent turn signal notification - Lane assist - great feature! - Play MP3 files on car radio (FM station) (I didn't think I'd use that, but it's great not having to carry my iPod with me) - Audiobook playback (I didn't think that I could use that, but I) - FM station seems to work fine but, like other stations, I sometimes get interference - Only use FM when listening to a book or MP3s Cons: - Doesn't play protected music files - there should be MP3s - screen at 755t is really a big pack There is. The 1350t didn't appear to have any stains at all. - Although the 755t plays MP3s, it will NOT play custom POI notifications - The FM broadcast failed once and I had to play with it for 10 minutes to get it working. It doesn't work until I switch sources from MP3 to Audiobook and back again. The documentation on what I had to do to set up the device was incomplete. Need a better Quick Starto Ex. If you want to see the screen with the satellites, you have to keep your finger on the connecting rods. Hour! - The intersection view feature has only appeared a few times even though I live in a big city. However, it is happening TOO EARLY to be of any value. It should turn on when I get to the intersection, not half a mile ahead. The 755t's security feature is useless. It's like the 1350t but MUCH WORSE! On 1350t, if you mis-insert a pin, you get one more chance and each character will appear for a second. On the 755t it temporarily doesn't show what you're typing, and if you get it wrong ONE TIME it blocks the GPS until you reach your home location. So if you're out and you make a mistake entering the code, you'll have a GPS until you get home. USELESS! Who came up with that! For anyone who's interested, I've abandoned the 755t mainly because it was cheaper and partly because I've included the ability to listen to MP3s (although I can't listen to most of my library because I have it through iTunes) and i can listen to audio books. Garmin vs TomTom – I've also used TOMTOM, but with TomTom Navigator it's almost impossible to browse the map to see your route once you've started your journey. It's easy with Garmin. However, I cannot assume any liability for newer devices. They can be easier. Also, you MUST know the city to enter an address, and this can be a problem in a city with cities.
