Just 'hold' and 'use' until the sparks fly. I used this thing to make a cheesecake (so I had to stop and start it in 30 second intervals - 4 minutes each) when I added the eggs (start/stop about 5 times) sparks came out of the thing ! I've read the instructions and followed the interval recommendations, but this isn't my first experience of use. To return. I gave 2 stars for the good compact size and the attachments/addons. Heading to Walmart to buy a good old Mainstays blender😒
