I washed it with warm water and almost immediately after I put it in my aquarium the substance leached out (similar to milk) for a while. The log still smelled strongly of paint and there was an oily residue on the surface near the waterline. I ended up using vinegar which got rid of the smell and oily stuff. I saw no evidence of white matter. Maybe I didn't wash it long enough. My rooster only uses it when feeding and nothing else. I also use this magazine to add new water when changing the water. It moves a bit but mine is in a 5 gallon tank so it doesn't get lost.
