Review on 🌐 Enhanced GPS Accuracy with GlobalSat ND-105C Micro USB GPS Receiver by Jair Baltrusch

Revainrating 5 out of 5

The ND-105C is ideal for low-cost sailing, NOW BIG IMPROVED!

This GPS module has been used to navigate sea routes for a year and a half. It's paired with a $150 Lenovo S31 laptop with a 32GB SSD and just 2GB of RAM. Navigation program Coastal Navigator. The processor in the laptop belongs to the Intel N series, it is slow but consumes little power and is fast enough to run a navigation program. The GPS has an 8 inch USB to micro USB port for connecting to a laptop. It attaches with Velcro to the top right panel of the screen. The GPS module also works very precisely below deck. I checked the signal strength of the satellites above deck and found only slightly better signal strength. Cloudiness and humidity are more important to signal strength than a boat's deck. Launch is always quick, but I recommend letting it warm up while the boat prepares to sail. When the ground speed drops to 0.01 knots, the GPS is ready to navigate. About the size of a large postage stamp, but as accurate as the larger specialized units. While I haven't had any GPS-related issues, I would recommend taking a spare. For only $30, why not? I also have a Garmin dedicated GPS fish finder, but I only use it to find a sandy anchorage. Want a bigger screen? Just buy a big laptop. The total cost of the navigation package is only $500. The cost of a 14-inch screen and a special device is $ 5,000. Like Garmin, the cockpit repeaters connect via Bluetooth. When the GPS is connected to the laptop screen, the laptop can move freely on the boat. Mouse, the GPS system is much easier to use than any dedicated system. Ideal laptops to use would be the ASUS UX430UA or Lenovo 720s, although any low end, low power (long battery life) laptop will do. Original unit still working perfectly, 8/11/2020, just got another one as a backup as the Garmin Bluetooth connection failed recently. There may be something wrong with the latest Win10 update. Anyway very happy to convey the new information on the apparently much improved ND-105C GPS module. The original ND-105C took an hour or more to warm up to reach a low speed over ground (SOG) of 0.01 knots. This new module reached 0.01 knots in just 3 minutes. !Nice improvement!

Pros
  • This is a NMEA GPS receiver. Compatible with most NMEA compatible navigation software (not included). A third party tool is required to convert to a "GPS sensor" for use with Windows 10 applications. Please read the item description for details.
Cons
  • Low repairability
