This is a speaker replacement, it works well and as expected. It works when power is applied, and not just with "toner". However, if you plug the amplifier's power supply directly into the outlet you want to tone, it works like a "toner". So if you just buy a speaker and have a power supply with an amplifier, you could theoretically save a few bucks. I use "" with the word "toner" because it's really not a true linear toner, just a power supply over a line that feeds the speaker. watch batteries, and this one uses a standard battery so no special batteries are required for added convenience, but we're talking about the PT-350 itself, not the speaker itself.
