Hard To Gauge is the best heating mat

I bought this sticky heating pad as an alternative heat source for my pet turtle. He's a spoiled lazy turtle who usually sleeps in a heated dog bed (with curtains). That's what my rating is based on. I myself am not a permanent owner of reptiles. Why did I buy this heating pad? Well I have a second carrier that is long on the inside. This is one of those plastic pet carriers with a cage door and a top window. My tortoise loves napping there. I bought a second dog bed and put it in a long tote but my tortoise liked it so much she stayed in it for a few days. It gets cold at night so I put a heating pad under this dog bed. But the problem is that the turtle crawled out of a warm bed and just rested at the entrance to the cage without moving. It gets cold in there, so I was trying to figure out how to heat the entire length of the beam. That's how I found this sticky heating pad. I put it in the bottom of the stretcher just in front of the cage near the door and put a towel on it. I've only used it a couple of times and the turtle seems to like it, but I haven't turned it on that often because you can't tell how much heat it draws. I've read similar complaints about this rug. from other reviewers, but I bought one anyway because I knew there was no sensor. But I'm nervous because I don't know how far to turn the knob. I have a hard time feeling how warm it is because the turtle usually lies on it and I don't want to wake it up. Vets say the only way to accurately measure a heating pad's temperature is to use a thermometer, but I don't know how I would go about it. So, I don't use this hot water bottle that's attached to a glass surface. As I said, I put it under the towel at the bottom of the stretcher. I've watched it closely to make sure it doesn't overheat, but I don't use it that often. I want it to have little notches or words that say 'Low', 'Medium' and 'High'. It would help a lot. But the strip warms up. That's why I'm only giving it three stars.
