Review on LG 27UN850 W: Borderless DisplayHDR Monitor with Adjustable Stand, USB Hub, and High Dynamic Range by Nathaniel Cohn

Revainrating 4 out of 5

nice monitor, USB-C implementation has problems in Mac OS

I ordered this monitor hoping to save space and money compared to a traditional 4K monitor and USB-C/Thunderbolt dock for my MacBook. I was hoping to use one cable for video, data and charging. It works in most cases, but there are some frustrating issues with the USB-C capabilities on this monitor. The monitor is having trouble charging my Macbook, sometimes the charging current drops to less than 10W and sometimes it stops completely, which can only be fixed by turning the monitor on and off. I'm not sure what the power rating of the USB-A ports on the back of the monitor is. They work reasonably well with flash drives, graphics tablets, keyboards and mice, and other low-voltage devices, but trying to charge your iPhone with them results in a USB power error message. Audio output to the monitor is not always recognized by my laptop and often requires unplugging and replugging the USB-C cable for it to work. The mute and volume keys on an Apple keyboard are disabled when using the monitor's audio output, which is a common problem with many cheaper digital audio interfaces, but compared to Dell's dedicated desktop hubs or USB-C monitors or Apple is still a disappointment You can continue to use these keys. I downloaded a software package from LG hoping it would include drivers to enable these features or improve the reliability of other USB-C features, but that doesn't change anything. The display itself is great and I have no issues or complaints about it since it's only a monitor, but I don't think the USB-C implementation justifies the extra cost over a display-only version of the same monitor. I can get this working but will probably end up buying a Thunderbolt 3 hub to hopefully handle charging and audio more reliably. I love the picture quality on a 4k display, but if I had to do it again I would either go for a cheaper version of the monitor with just the display and an external hub, or look for options from Dell or another manufacturer.
