Review on LG UBK90: The Ultimate 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray Player with Dolby Vision (2018) by Deron Gilliam

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Plays great quality but lacks the essentials

When I first got it I had the same problem that others reported with this UBK90 and the tray wouldn't open fully. As a result, I had to send it back to LG for warranty repair. Since I got it back, I no longer have this problem. We bought this UBK90 device to work with our LG OLED65C8PUA TV. The image quality with these devices has been excellent so far. The UBK90 plays all our DVDs, Blu-Ray and 4K discs with ease and rarely has any problems once it starts playing BUT we often find it difficult to get it to perform basic functions. Sometimes we find it difficult to open the tray to insert a new disc or take out an old disc. Both the button on the device and the button on the remote control have the same problem. About 2/3 of the time they work properly, but another 1/3 of the time they don't work and then the device has to be unplugged for it to respond again. Other times, when there's already a disc in the tray that I want to watch, the tray opens when I press the play button on the remote and doesn't close until I physically close the tray. This is especially true for discs with TV shows where you just want to watch the next release. It's not bad, but I'd rather not get up to close the compartment if the button on the remote worked. Lastly, I wish there had ever been a firmware update. There has been a firmware update for a few months but it never works on this UBK90. The device is connected to the internet and I can access YouTube and it says it is downloading an update. I see the percentages go up to 100% and the cursor sits there, twisting and turning like it's doing something. But I left it like that for a few days and it never applies the update. Sooner or later I always have to cancel the firmware update when I want to watch a disc.

Pros
  • Backwards compatible with Blu-ray and DVD - This LG UHD Blu-ray player is backwards compatible and supports both of these popular legacy standards
Cons
  • Not as thick as other models
