Review on Topeak Super Tourist DX Trunk Rack with Side Bar for Disc Brake Bicycles by Gregory Sirgio

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Solid shelf at a decent price

This is, I confess, my first rack, so there is nothing quite like it. However, the stand feels solid, is easy to set up, and works admirably. I bike and use it to carry about 20-30 pounds for 12 miles one way. Not exactly a heavy load, but enough to open a skinny shelf I think. Pros: The added side rails make it easier to attach my panniers and leave the main rack surface accessible for a rear bag or other stuff. Installation on my bike with disc brakes was a breeze. The hull feels fairly solid with no sign of flex, flex or other structural issues. Less good: I assemble and take my panniers every time I park and the trunk is already showing signs of wear in these places, even though my hooks are rubberized. and plastic quick release. Also, I find the rack quite heavy, although given the price and carrying capacity, I don't think the weight is unreasonable. Mounting: The rack comes with everything needed to mount it on my bike (disc brake, soldered on top). screw holes below) and more. The included steel straps had to be bent into place, which can be a problem if overstretched. I actually bent them by reattaching the stand and tightening the screws and it seems to work great - they have a perfect arc, they don't get too much stress and they don't rub. I'll probably go back and trim off the excess at some point just so there isn't a 3-4 inch of steel tape running under the post. I had to play around with the attachment straps as my first try left them too long and the posture wasn't entirely level. Other: A solid panel on top acts as a sort of mini fender, keeping mud/splash out. Drivers, but if you really need protection, get wings (I plan on installing them later this week). I use them with the Avenir Excursion large baskets with no reported problems. Summary: For the price, I think this is a great option, esp. for the cyclist who isn't too concerned about the weight but wants a decent load capacity. *** UPDATE: I've been using this rack for over a year now and have ridden over 4000 miles. I had no problems with the shelf. I even tested it to the manufacturer's limit when I was carrying a banker's box full of folders (easily 25 pounds or more) in addition to my loaded baskets (20 pounds). This is definitely a good buy.
