First of all, note that polishing paste is not included, while most others do. More on that in the last paragraph. There are many cheap slings. Everyone who sharpens knives should have it as it gives your knives an extra sharp edge with just a few strokes and is easy to use. Even the cheap works well enough to be glad you have, but you might need something better. First, the (possible) benefits that result from this. It's about 2 inches shorter and 1 inch wider than most of the competition. Maybe a little easier to place in some storage areas. The wood is not as thin as I expected, but still slightly thinner than my current sling on the block. The width can be more attractive if you prefer shorter strokes that cover most of the blade rather than a few long strokes on the narrower part of the blade. Some slings in this price range are only single sided, below the double sided slings. The overall quality isn't anything special, so unless you prefer the shape, there aren't many reasons to go for this one. It's dry reclaimed leather plus a thin layer of hard material added to the 'smooth' side of the paddle. That's to be expected at the price. The skin is glued unevenly. From one end it is a few mm from the edge, from the other end it touches. Both sides are wrong. I would like leather to the hem for use with the Mora which has a cutting edge that extends to the hilt. My old sling fit perfectly and was inexpensive. For first-time buyers of slings, the problem with this product is that it doesn't come with a polishing paste that does most of the work. If this is your first line and you don't have a polish for other reasons, now is the time to look for one. Most slings contain a small piece that lasts a very long time. It's just a piece of wax with crushed rocks inside, so this stuff is very cheap for a maker to buy in bulk and include a sling. But the consumer resents the need to purchase it separately as a standalone product. The last time I was at one of those big hardware stores, they only sold a pack of 5 different cereals for eight bucks (no need). So check the current cost of each polish here and be aware that these are additional costs that you don't incur upfront with most other slings at this price point. You have to pay a few bucks for what the manufacturer could have included for a few nickels.
