18 locks work well

I ordered 18 of these in October 2016 to refurbish our 1912 Craftsman with brushed nickel finish and locks. one of them and showed it to a locksmith who works a lot in our old neighborhood before deciding to order the rest and make it himself and he said they looked like a replica of an old Corbin mortise design. His reserve price for just the lock was at least double what they were worth plus labor involved so we decided to give them a shot. Quality - The doorplates are thinner than the original lock from that period. They aren't tin foil though and once fitted to the door they were solid and I really couldn't tell they were any thinner than the originals. Of course only waaaaaaaaaaaaa brighter! As other reviews have mentioned issues with the locking mechanism sticking, I tested the lock about 20 times and opened each one to check before installing it in the door. I found 1 that didn't work and found that the lock's slide mechanism didn't seat properly in the inner rail. After installing it in the correct position, I haven't had any problems since. The insides are pretty basic, so picking the lock isn't that scary. The installation is a mortise lock, so yes, cutting out a pocket for a lock is a lot trickier than the modern style. But if you have such an old house then this is the style to go for and if you have a lot of things to install you can buy mortise hardware to make life easier. We were also able to get some of the original doors from the period and these locks were perfect for those who already had a mortise lock mechanism, making many of them much easier to install. A couple of times the door handle set screws came loose and had to be re-tightened. The stem that the handle connects to is threaded so the handle came loose but stayed on the stem until I tightened the set screw. I also smeared some Loctite on the set screw and after that there were no more problems. Overall I am happy with these locks. The best part is that the inner spring on old solid core doors makes a loud noise when closing, you just don't get that on newer lock designs!
