Thanks to Revain's great return policy I decided "what the heck" and ordered a knockoff scanner. I think all handheld scanners basically have the same pros and cons. Pros: Lightweight, easy to use, although the product description says no SD card is included, not only did I have a mini SD card that fits the scanner, I also had an SD adapter. to be able to use it on my computer in one package which as one of the previous reviewers said was an unexpected surprise :) comes with a cloth sleeve so you can carry it to the library or elsewhere or protect it from dust at home. There is editing software out there, or since it's saved in JPEG format it can be edited with your own software, from a super fancy 500 program to free software like Gimp. The image can also be OCRed in programs like Word, although I haven't played with this feature yet. Figuring out how to lay the book flat enough, keep your hand level, and hold the scanner level takes some practice. If the scanner goes crooked, the image will be crooked. I don't see that as a negative unless you're considering buying a piano and being a Gershwin if you're trying to play for the first time or a few times :) It's just a matter of practice and rocking the book and aligning the arrows to it on the side of the scanner and understand how much is being scanned and the scanning light is in the center so you need to remember to start at the top where you want to scan and work through. With books, I've found that using non-slip kitchen mats that fit under cutting boards is also stable enough so I can focus on keeping the scanner level with both hands and not worry about the book slipping . Scans have improved. Don't be afraid to scan from the side, if that makes the adjustment easier, you can always rotate the image from the side to the right with the software. Even go from bottom to top, which helped with some of the pages I tried to scan. The clarity and quality of the scans I get makes me happy. I have some cookbooks and I want to scan them, upload them to Living Cookbook 2011 and free up some space in my crowded house. This scanner will be the perfect assistant. Being lightweight, it can also be easily carried to the library and copy pages from a book that cannot be checked. It's ideal for students, say you need to borrow someone's notes, you can literally scan them in a few minutes, return the notes, the notes are on the SD card, and get them to download home. The only negative is that the spines have to be pretty flat and I could see the damage, plus the book needs to be compressed. The scanner comes with software, USB cables, batteries, carrying case, white cardboard to calibrate, easy to read instructions (and I'm telling you, easy to read means something to me, I'm so far from being a techie it's sad , and even I could understand it) You can set it up in minutes and start scanning with joy. skill in a few days.
