Review on Walker 53717 Certified Catalytic Converter by Steven Cox

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Solid stuff, works well.

This converter is a quality part. The tubing is solid, has a solid oxygen sensor connector, the bends and flanges were properly aligned, and the welds were clean. The original is a single assembly with the resonator to the muffler inlet, replacements are sold in two pieces to allow for longer shipping length. Walker sells the transducer and resonator sections separately. All I could do was replace the converter section of the original pipe, connect it to the old pipework with a Dynomax 33228 stainless steel clamp, carefully measure the new converter assembly and cut the original pipe down with a jigsaw. This converter has been replaced due to code P0420 which is very common on 1.8L engines on Corolla and Toyota Matrix platforms. Toyotas are particularly picky when it comes to catalytic converter performance. The price of the original converter, which probably had the best chance of working properly, was almost $1,500 and was prohibitively expensive. This particular vehicle had very high mileage and consumed moderate amounts of oil so this was likely made worse by oil/soot contamination in addition to normal failure. There is no solution other than an engine overhaul or replacement, so I warned the owner that the problem could potentially reoccur. However, I was very pleased that the car completed the drive cycle quickly and the code was not returned after a few weeks of use. Drive.
