Review on 🍞 Hamilton Beach 4-Slice Toaster Oven, Proctor Silex Black (31118R), One Size by Beth Martin

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Small, good initially but poorly made and broken after 14 months

This is an update of my previous review found in the next two paragraphs. It worked quite well for about 11 months, then the top heating element became uneven, glowed very bright somewhere, got dimmer somewhere. It eventually burned out, and at that point I discovered the element couldn't be replaced, so throw it away and buy something other than Proctor Silex. As other reviewers have noted, only the advertiser could describe it as "Extra-Large" - in fact, the interior isn't as wide as the old "Standard" model it replaced. However, it is deeper and has a curved rear extension, making it suitable for a 9-inch cymbal, for example. It claims to toast four slices of bread at once - but that would only be possible if you bought one of those pathetic square slices. - sliced bread for sandwiches. Otherwise you are limited to 2 or 3 discs depending on the shape. As others have pointed out, the image on Revain is misleading as it shows a metal tray above the counter where it doesn't fit. The metal shell slides under the stand (into the same and only slot) when the stand is inserted in the position shown in the picture (left and right edges below center - marked as "n” in the instructions). While not respecting the controls as conveniently as its now-dead predecessor (which had a temperature dial for the oven function, a browning dial for toasting, and a start button to start toasting), this model offers the added flexibility I find. Convenient Top Temperature Control - From eff Active off to 450F and then to one of two always-on positions - either with the top bar only (for frying) or with both bars (for toasting). The bottom dial is a timer with the ability (by turning it counterclockwise slightly) to turn it to the "always on" position. I find the timer to be a more accurate method of controlling toast browning than the device commonly used in toaster ovens (which is a heat-controlled device sensitive to ambient temperature and recent use). The bottom line is that toasting a slice of bread is a bit more complex (check the temperature setting and change it if necessary and turn the timer instead of just pressing a button), but it is more flexible. Generally positive. We've spent a lot of time replacing our old model (there doesn't seem to be anything quite like it) and looked at many options, including much larger models with more options. From reviews (and basic physics) the big problem with large models is that they take a long time to toast just one slice of bread - the time it takes is largely determined by the bread's distance from the heating element (its temperature). is limited). If you're worried about toasting your bread, get a toaster oven that's not too tall. We ended up choosing this model because we felt we wasted too much time trying to find something fairly insignificant - this one was under $30 (we got the black model, the white was even cheaper), so we bought it. just to see if this does what we need. This turned out to be a good choice for us.

Pros
