Review on BORA Portamate PM 3550 Super Mobile by Brent Rosecrans

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Make life easier for a small workshop

I already had the PM-3500, 2500, 1000 before ordering so I know this is a quality mobile base. I recently bought a lathe and decided to put 4 fuser rollers on the bottom thinking that would be enough. Stability wise it was, but it added 5 inches to the height of the bar which made the turn very dangerous because the tool is now resting on my chest instead of waist height. I purchased this tool base based on previous experience and was not disappointed. The wheel is wide and very heavy. All parts are made of very thick steel. Assembly was easy and all the holes lined up perfectly. For my lathe, due to the dimensions, I had to buy an extra extension to be able to use it. But it's still worth it because the height of the bar is back around my waist and safer. Maneuvering this 500-pound lathe isn't that difficult either, since all 4 wheels can rotate, an added benefit over the PM-3500. The only real complaint I had with the 3500 and this PM-3550 fixed it. The only major issue I had was the uneven ground and movement. The biggest problem with this is that the foot that stabilizes the base doesn't move up/down much giving very little ground clearance. Therefore, when moving on an uneven surface, the foot sometimes gets stuck on the ground.
