We have been using them for over a year now. Probably five gas stations of that before we ran into a problem. Once they are on, it will be difficult to take them off until you figure out how to take them off. We usually turn them upside down and put them in a coffee cup with hot water. Let sit for a few minutes, then use a butter knife to scoop under the rim, push up to the top of the lid, and turn inside out while pushing the lid off the jug. We're good enough that we don't use hot water every time. Then add water, snap the little valve back onto the lid, put the little blue lid back on and then put it back on the pitcher. The only problem we have. After using the hot water method, we dropped them into a cup of water containing a light iodine mixture. We let it sit and then dry it. All 35 gallons of water on next refill had an odd taste. We had three extra caps that weren't used. We've poured three jugs, refilled and used new lids and they taste great. I'm not sure what we did, but we probably won't be using hot water to change caps in the future.
