The standard spacing on vertical is 24 inches on center, meaning you need two 26-inch metal brackets to center your garage door opener if the horizontal beam is not directly above your garage door opener. I ended up cutting the 24-inch and both 20-inch brackets in half with a hacksaw and making a triangle brace so the garage door opener could sit further back than the mount would allow for in its default state. Not the happiest camper with the lack of preparation on the manufacturer's side, but at least it works now.
