Review on ๐Ÿ“บ Tri-Color E-Ink Display Module: 2.13inch Three-Color Electronic Screen Panel with Embedded Controller - Ideal for Raspberry Pi/Arduino/STM32/Jetson Nano by Scott Larson

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Hardware OK, software and manual missing

The hardware is excellent as far as I can tell. 4.5 stars. The update is slow, but find me a low-cost e-paper hardware supplier out of stock. The display is really sharp, keeps the picture, there are no dead pixels (although the first device that was delivered to me was dead on arrival), I like it a lot. Software provided specifically for Raspberry Pi/Python is missing. Some of the libraries mentioned in the documentation are out of date, and the Python 3 folder simply contains a copy of the Python 2 code, which throws an error when run through Python 3 (even after installing Pillow). After installing all the necessary dependencies and running through Python 2, I was in business. The support documentation in their place isn't the greatest. I love it when a company gives you the right information and steps to activate a device and then lets you do something really cool with it. This company for this product doesn't bother updating the documentation to reflect the latest information, at least for the device/language I want to use (Raspberry Pi/Python 3). Because I have to spend my time refactoring their code which is in the python 3 folder to actually work in python 3 when I feel Waveshare should handle it and because they don't update their information, which takes a lot longer to get them working, they get a 2 star rating versus a 3 star rating. If they improve and update the documentation so that someone following what they say can get a working result, then this product would easily get a 4 or 5.

Pros
  • No backlight, shows the latest content for a long time even when the device is off
Cons
  • Poorly thought out
