PS See my workarounds in the comments. The device seems to work well once you overcome these hurdles. Revisited: Without the help of the (apparently assigned) "technical support" staff, I've found workarounds for the two bugs that were bugging me (and I assume other macOS X 10.13.4 "High Use Sierra"). when mounting or using this Time Machine volume. But such a "device" does not require a NASA computer engineer with console analysis skills to function properly. However, I was able to do this, which is why I am giving them a higher rating (whereas I could have given half a star). For those who don't run into these bugs, this looks like a useful device for the money - certainly cheaper and more secure than third-party cloud services. Fixed: After one of Promise's tech support reps said that the Time Machine support failure was a known issue, another insisted that there was no such known issue and Time Machine was working fine. They then referred me to StackOverflow for a 'fix' that I had already seen and tried (without success) before contacting their support team. Their online support is clearly written, ignorant and even inconsistent. Not sure if it would ever work for me, I decided to return the device. IF it worked as promised, it would be a great buy; but it doesn't and support seems clueless. I would give this 5 stars (and still might) but there is a bug in the firmware that prevents this from working as a Time Machine volume if you are running the latest version of macOS (10.13.4, High Sierra) carry out. They promise a solution but no ETA. So keep that in mind if you need to use this as your Time Machine network solution right away.
