I didn't have much luck with wicks like this until I saw a video of the soldering iron being placed on the opposite side of the board. In my (admittedly unprofessional) experience, placing a hot iron over the wick seems to stop the wick from working. However, as I mentioned, using it seems to work pretty well. To do this you will need some sort of vise or clamp to hold the circuit board vertically. The product is actually nothing more than a finely woven wire that absorbs the solder through capillary action. I got better results with it than with the cheap handheld vacuums that come with many soldering stations.
