Review on Insignia NS-DXA1: Advanced Digital to Analog TV Tuner Converter Box for Regular TV Sets by John Bailey

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Good DTV converter for most needs

I have 6 DTV converters made up of a mix of this Insignia model, Zenith DTT901 and Zenith DTT900. Although all these models are essentially the same and are made by Philips. Insignia is the most affordable version of the Zenith DTT900. The Zenith DTT901 has an analog pass-through feature, meaning you can still watch analog TV, which can be important for channels that continue to fall back to digital. *** Good points are *** - Small size and easy setup - Improved picture quality compared to analogue TV tuners - Very good reception of digital channels even with a simple bunny ear antenna. - Light and simple remote control with separate buttons for most functions - The remote control can be programmed to turn the TV on and off. - Bright red and blue LED backlight makes it easy to see if the tuner is on or off. ** Negative points include *** - The on-screen TV guide is too simplistic and only lists current and upcoming on-screen shows. the channel you are tuned to. Like most LNBs, this Insignia doesn't do a good job of tuning into weak stations, resulting in a stuttering or jerky picture until the antenna is repositioned to improve reception. This model (unlike the Zenith DTT901) doesn't have analog passthrough, so you can't just turn off the DTV tuner, to receive normal analogue channels. The remote only turns the TV on and off. It cannot be programmed to control other functions on your TV. All in all, it's a great DTV converter for most people's needs. Consumer Reports ran a test that gave the Zenith models a slight edge over the identical Insignia models, but I honestly couldn't tell any difference in image quality. I give this 4 stars and the Zenith DTT901 4.5 stars because Zenith has an analog loop through function. To be honest, I couldn't tell any difference in image quality.
