Solved a problem I had with heat transfer from the bottom of my propane forge to the furnace below (part of the stand I made). This keeps heat transfer at a much lower level so the plate no longer warps on me. It also makes it safer to place other things on the shelf under the forge (about 8-12 inches from the bottom of the forge) without worry. I chose 1/2 inch thickness as I don't have a lot of space. work with. I used 1-1/2" thick corner iron to support the forge. Enough framing should be left over the insulation for the firebricks to be securely fastened to either end of the forge. I might use 1". , as it seems to be a little thicker. But 1/2 inch works fine. Plan to use what's left on the heat shield (around the front of the forge) to vent some of the heat escaping from the front.
