Lots of criticism but no junk

I will not say that people who have had a bad experience with this product are lying and I will not question their competence in installing drains. I consider myself a competent DIYer and can say that I have ordered/installed two of these with no problems. I was really impressed with the quality of the materials. I was expecting plastic tubes but in fact the whole product looked like it was made out of some kind of metal. It's even been smeared with bronze until it hits the U-trap (or is it a J-trap?). Usually the part that goes under the sink is cheap blue plastic. After installation, the first test revealed a very small leak. By tiny I mean you can run the faucet for about 2 minutes before even a single drop comes out. Turning the packing nut about a quarter turn solved the problem. I did NOT use any additional sealants: no silicone, no plumbing. There are no instructions so you need to know what you are doing when purchasing this product. Also note that the kit includes a BLACK rubber washer which I can't see in the photos. Three clear/white washers form a seal on either side of the sink. The black will help form a seal at the bottom of the drain where you attach the mounting piece that goes in the J-trap. I almost didn't realize it fell when I first installed the drain, but luckily I did. I suspect a lot of people who have had issues with leaks lost this washer because it doesn't stay in place very well, and if you have a dark colored vanity (like me) it's easy to get lost and messed up will. UPDATE: 2 weeks after installation I noticed a small puddle in my vanity. This is because the rubber washers felt a little flimsy and seemed to be slowly shifting. However, this only happened in one of the drains. I ordered a replacement and had the same problem. I think if you tighten them TOO TIGHT they will actually work less. So on the third try I applied a flexible washer to the threads and hand tightened. That helped. So I'm reducing my rating from 5 to 3 stars.
