In a 30 year old house there was a very creaky second floor hallway under a thick carpet. So I bought one of those "deep scan" spike finders, but it didn't work. I resorted to drilling at 1" intervals down a 16" length with a beam finder screw until I hit one, then ran a tape measure to mark the rest. Fair warning: DO NOT touch the bolt finder screw after drilling a few holes as it is hot enough to blister if touched. Although it may seem obvious and I actually had this thought while digging some holes in the ground, I had a silly moment and decided to touch it later anyway and ended up with a nasty little burn on my right index finger and thumb. Totally my fault but please bear with me. After finding the joists it took me 3 bolts to deaden the biggest creaking and I drove 2 more into each remaining joist in the hallway to deaden it completely. Serrated screws break easily, and you can tell when they're deep enough because they "pop out" when the bit hits the bottom of the small three-pronged level. (That means you can pierce and they'll stop automatically once the chisel hits the bottom of the template.) In the long run, I'd be concerned about the longevity of a square chisel, as an eccentric with each chisel typically shortens its life, but since you'll probably only do this a few times, that's probably fine. With all other lead fasteners, a quick-release fastener is generally undesirable, but it is definitely present in this set. Just remember that your beat won't last forever. I am very satisfied with this kit. My upstairs hallway had transformed from a creaky bouncy castle to a calm, hard floor. Now I can actually use the hallway upstairs while my wife is teaching online and we don't have to worry about waking up my mother-in-law when we get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom (and vice versa). vice versa). -Verse). The only reason for 4 stars and not 5 is that the things I mentioned here are things I had to learn myself and it would be nice if they were included in the guide or video. It works, but first you need to learn how to do it. Also, I haven't tried it on hardwood, although I intend to try and I'll update this review if and if I decide to do so.
