I've been using this router for a while with stock firmware which has worked as expected. The range covered my entire house with 3 beds, 2 baths and some outdoor time, didn't get too hot thanks to great top ventilation (don't stack) and SpeedTest showed it to work as fast or faster than any other router I've tried i have ever tried Then I installed the Tomato firmware designed for this router model and I was even happier. This firmware is created by the community and unlocks additional features of your router. If you need more range, you can do this. Need more QoS controls? it is available I've never tried the router download feature, which lets you download a torrent without a computer - I'm not interested in it, so I'm not sure if it still works with Tomato firmware. The appearance of the router is aesthetic at the same time. pleasant and useful. The lights are useful and easy to read, albeit a bit brighter (in a dark room this will partially glow blue). I like the solid white color, it also fits well in the Apple/Mac house. Three antennas are a bit gaudy, but good for the signal strength. If you have larger antennas, you can plug them in and get even more performance, especially if you're using Tomato firmware and want to extend the range of your router. You go to the advanced settings. In advanced mode, you can enable QoS, port forwarding, DMZ, static IPs, MAC address watchlist, USB/NAS devices, VPN, bandwidth control, content filtering, custom DNS, traffic logging, monitoring list of connected devices, script support (Tomato ) and traffic restrictions ( date/time/computer). It should be noted that this is a single-band router - it only transmits in the 2.4 GHz band. Although this band can be congested with heavy traffic from many devices around the house and from other nearby houses, this is usually not a big problem if you simply choose a less frequently used channel. I had a dual band router and the 5GHz band was nothing special and I really haven't had the best results with it. In fact, this router died quickly, and while I can't blame the dual-band nature of it, I think it might have something to do with it getting very hot on both bands at the same time all day. a router that lets you choose custom firmware? Do you want a router with amazing range and antennas that can be replaced with longer ones if needed? Looking for a great single band router? That's it.
