Perfect replacement for Lexus ES330

My 2004 Lexus ES330 started making a horrible screeching noise that varied in pitch and intensity with engine RPM . Sounds like a drive belt or pulley problem. The most terrible thing was the smell of burnt plastic, which was very noticeable on the first day. The noise became less pronounced and gradually intensified, and then disappeared after a day or two during movement. Also, the smell is gone, but this is clearly not a problem that will go away on its own. I pulled out my cheap multimeter and noticed that the battery output voltage was 12.6V. With the engine running and the lights/fan/radio on the voltage was barely 13.1v. Before it was over 14.4v so I needed a new alternator. None of the lights on the dash ever came on, so I suspect it's probably still charging the battery, albeit at a very low voltage. Without replacement, the car battery will be discharged and the starter will not start the engine. It's only a matter of time before someone gets stranded. The Lexus dealer's estimate was between $800 and $1,200. Ouch! The car has 170,000 miles on the odometer so I decided to do it myself. Your local auto parts store sells Denso OEM remanufactured alternators for around $210. Their own brand was a little cheaper at $180, but I found them at Revain for a lot less. Why not try? The manufacturer is located here in Tennessee (Made in America). Installation didn't go too bad, but you'll need 10mm, 12mm, and 14mm sockets. My fight was with frozen bolts but with a little brute force they all came out. The new alternator fits and works like the original part. All plugs and connectors fit perfectly. My old alternator had rust/corrosion and smelled burnt. The pulley was worn and the bearings were not moving smoothly. A quick test of the battery after installation showed that the voltage had risen to 14.4 volts with the engine running and the lights/accessories on. Let's see how long this lasts. I'll update this review when it lasts a few years, but for now I'm giving it 5 stars for price, fit, and functionality.

Pros
  • Meets or exceeds OEM specs for quality, performance and fit
Cons
  • Mostly good, but...
