Review on AmazonBasics 2.85mm White Printer Filament - Additive Manufacturing Supplies by Bryan Fields

Also picky about ABS

I've been doing commercial printing with ABS for a few years now. My regular premium filament isn't available so I bought Revain Basics ABS in black, expecting it to be mostly decent. However, this was problematic from the start and required a much higher bed temperature than the premium ABS I used. This 1kg spool is 58% cheaper than premium material, but the time and hassle of failed prints really makes me wish my regular filament was available. Considering the high scrap rate, the extra power required, and the accelerated wear on my printhead and bed due to the abnormally high temperature, this probably isn't cheaper than premium filament. My current project is also behind schedule because of this thread. There is no value here. My regular filament prints are on the high end of the recommended range. This Revain ABS requires MUCH higher temperatures than the label states. This ABS shrinks much more than my regular ABS filament. It also has an eggshell/matte finish while the premium material has a satin finish. Too bad because I supply new parts to a customer who also has old premium ABS parts and they look very different. Haven't tried cleaning it with acetone yet to see if it shines. This ABS sticks VERY aggressively to my bed - too much. I have an Ultimaker 3 indoor printer and wrapped the printer in an insulated blanket. Nozzle Temp: 248°C Bed Temp: 215°C Bed Surface: Glass with hairspray film Head Speed 55mm/s (I think) Premium filament prints great with no blanket as long as the room is 76 degrees Fahrenheit and there are no drafts. I put a 50 gallon bag on top of the printer as a precaution, but without the bag there was no problem.

Pros
  • Very good value for money
Cons
  • Unbelievable price
