I can't tell you what it is but I can tell you for sure that it is NOT real gold and should not be eaten. Real gold can be ingested as it is inert and therefore non-toxic. I have used real gold many times and this is absolutely not true. I also did a hardness test and the color changed which would not happen with gold. While this works great for craft projects, there's really no reason to spend that much money on this little craft or gilding product (unless you want to use real gold for gilding, which doesn't fit the bill anyway).
