Review on Enhance Productivity with Black Box USB-C 4K KVM Switch: 2-Port for Efficient Workflow by Patrick Johnson

Revainrating 1 out of 5

Almost 5, but not quite

I was expecting to find a pure USB-C (Thunderbolt-3) switch (2 USB-C in and 1 out) with no problems, but couldn't find one. I tried IOGEAR - Access Pro 2-Port USB-C KVM but it only showed port 1 (I got a replacement and it had the same issue so I just got a refund). The black box works well with one or two minor exceptions. I originally had a USB (2.0) keyboard plugged into the USB HID port on the back of the device (and my mouse was plugged into the keyboard). Mac could tell it was a keyboard, but no keystrokes were visible. The mouse (connected to the keyboard) worked fine. The display toggled normally, as did the USB port, it just didn't show any keystrokes. However, it worked when I connected the keyboard to the uxb-3 connector on the back of the black box. I set the switch (as is) to 6g + USB2. The only remaining exception is that black box hotkey sequences (e.g. to switch between devices) don't work. So I have to press a button on the device to switch, and I can't change any settings (scanning speed, etc.), but I can live with that. So I'm a lucky tourist. I also like the fact that the black box is a bit heavy for a small box, so moving the cable around the box doesn't move the box either. I don't know if it was intentional or just happened, but I like it. I will also reiterate what another reviewer said about cables. Not all USB-C cables are created equal. For example, Apple's own USB-C cable (charger) does NOT show the display it's plugged into a Mac, despite the description saying it's good for data and video. You should (stay with Apple) buy their USB-C cable (Tunderbold-3) and double the price I use for my MacBooks. Some USB-C pinouts show 2 unused pins used by the Tunderbolt-3, so make sure you're getting cables that are not only of good quality, but also functionally meet your needs.
